In this project Rachel Ivanoff and Jordan Twaddle designed an 15' x 8' timeline for the Star Trek: Exploring New Worlds exhibit currently on display at The Museum of Pop-Culture (MoPOP) in Seattle Washington. The timeline was made as part of a competitive class project at Cornish. The timeline details the fictional history of the Star Trek universe and features key events, their placement in the history of the series and movies, alternate timelines, and the time travel of characters such as Captains Kirk and Janeway. While developing our concept and design, Matt Cole, Exhibit Graphic Designer at MoPoP, gave guidance and direction on the project. The project culminated in a final present-
ation of our design to a panel of representatives from the MoPOP (then known as the EMP). Our design was chosen to be manufactured and is on display in the Star Trek exhibit.
Rachel and Jordan agreed to work together almost immediately. Rachel is a bit of a Trekkie and Jordan was
as new as could be to Star Trek. They found that difference in familiarity to the content, coupled with their design skills complimented each other too well not to take advantage
The class toured the Experience Music Project, which is now known as the Museum of Pop-Culture (MoPOP) and were introduced to the key concepts of exhibit design. They then researched the Star Trek universe extensively in search of interesting data points to suggest for their timeline.
They set out on a straightforward design. Something technical but decipherable. The most important items being visible from a distance, the detailed items smaller
and accessible for people to read and enjoy. They always kept the size of the project in mind as neither of them had worked on something to this scale before. They ultimately drafted two timeline concepts to present to the panel of EMP designers. Printing them at a 15"x8", full color. As
well as plotting a full scale test strip in black and white, Rachel and Jordan's timeline was chosen as the design
that would be displayed in the exhibit.
